Tips for Your Session

Tips on clothing selection

Please bring complete outfits-head to toe; if you have doubts, it is better to bring extra outfits.
Don't forget the accessories!
Some poses will show your feet, so don't forget to bring shoes & socks for each outfit that you plan to wear.
Wear comfortable shoes to the session; tight shoes may leave indentations or red marks that will show in any bare-foot poses.
Choose a variety of outfits.
For Senior portraits, it's a good idea to include both casual and more formal outfits.
For Group shots, it works best to coordinate colors (everyone where white, black, etc).
In any portrait, your face should be the focal point; long sleeve solids or very subtle prints are usually the most flattering in portraits.
Colors that photograph well

Rich, solid colors-royal blue, emerald or teal green, fuchsia, red, purple, mustard, etc. Solid colors work best for the classic portrait. (Note: Navy blue, dark green, and dark purple that are too dark often will appear black when photographed.)
Medium to dark clothes look the best on dark backgrounds.
Medium to light colors look the best on lighter colored backgrounds.
Colors that look great outdoors during summer are any earth tones, as well as blues, cream, pale green, or emerald green.
A long flowing dress will give a romantic look.
What about props?

Props can help to show your personality and record the types of activities you are involved in - especially for senior portraits. Be sure to bring some of your own props to your portrait session.
Musical Instrument
Leather / Letter Jacket
Uniform
Hats
Sports Equipment
Stuffed Animals
Sunglasses
Pets (*outdoor or location sessions only)
Who should I bring with me to my session?

If you choose to bring someone with you, we recommend that you bring one person that you trust and feel comfortable with, and who can help you with the important things like your hair, makeup, and clothes.

For seniors, Moms are great to bring along since often these photographs are being made for her; however, sometimes girls trust their friends more to fix their hair - so be sure to bring that one person you are going to be most comfortable with during your session.

You may also choose to have someone in some of the poses with you (best friend, boyfriend / girlfriend, etc.)

We do ask that you try to limit your guests to one other person.
Miscellaneous tips

Simplicity is often the key to a successful portrait.
Long sleeve dresses and shirts are recommended.
Coordinate your outfit from head to toe.
Darker clothes have a slimming effect.
Ideally, you should keep the tonal range of clothing in the same group, don't mix lights & darks in the same outfit.
Especially for seniors, it is best to bring along several clothing choices and let us help you choose.
Don't forget to bring your jewelry, especially your class ring.
You should wear your hair in your regular style. Guys should NOT have a fresh haircut. If you need a trim, try to have it done about a week before.
Get a good night's rest, relax and be ready for a great portrait session!
